What is Twitter?

What is Twitter exactly?  How can Twitter help my marketing?

In my last post, and in my excitement, I managed to inadequately explain the reasons why anyone would Twitter in the first place.  Thanks, for those of you who brought this to my attention.

After a great deal of soul-searching, writer's block, and a few false starts on an article on the topic, it made a lot more sense for me to share this video with you instead.

If a picture is worth a thousand words, and movies run at 30 frames(pictures) per second.  I suppose a "motion picture", then, ends up being worth a million words (give or take).  Here's a few mllion words about why Twitter is the next logical extension of the internet.

Now, let's take a look at that information from a marketing perspective: Rather than being disconnected from your audience, Twitter lets your audience understand that your business is run by people - real people, who do real things.  It's this connection that helps establish your brand as a service brand.  And being branded with value-added connections and services keeps your product from being commoditized.

Every product that does well has a zillion competitors the next day.  Today the iFart application is #1 iPhone application on iTunes.  Tomorrow, there will be another hundred or so.  What's different with your product is you, what you bring to it, and how you leverage your time to create a connection.

Twitter marketing lets you "broadcast" that connection, to create a highly leveraged sense of personalization.  You can broadcast to tens of thousands the littlest things that are of importance to you.  As a result, your audience has an opportunity to further bond with your brand, your image - your true self.  If you let people in, they have a chance create a bond which will be difficult to sever.   If you keep them at a distance, the connection is easily broken and your clients may wander off with any "Johnny come lately" who tries just a little harder or sells for just a little bit cheaper.

To your profitability,

- Daiv

You really expressed the importance of twitter so eloquently. I agree Twitter allows its users to develop a bond that is hard to severe. If someone ask why use Twitter, I will forward this post to them.
